This year, October 31st isn’t just Halloween...it’s also Deepavali. While Halloween isn’t commonly celebrated in Malaysia, Deepavali holds a special place in the hearts of many as one of the most cherished festivals.
Deepavali, also known as Diwali, is often called the Festival of Lights. Celebrated primarily by the Indian community, it marks the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. People illuminate their homes with oil lamps or candles, creating a warm, festive glow. This symbolic act of lighting up spaces represents bringing hope, joy, and prosperity into our lives.
Here in Malaysia, Deepavali is celebrated with beautiful traditions. Homes are decorated with vibrant rangoli (colorful patterns made from rice, sand, or flower petals), oil lamps are lit, and families gather for prayers and special meals. Sweet treats are shared, and it’s a time of family gatherings, laughter, and togetherness. The celebration reminds us of the importance of love, unity, and kindness.

Though I don’t personally celebrate Deepavali, I love how this festival adds brightness to our cultural tapestry in Malaysia. Here’s wishing everyone a joyful Deepavali, filled with light, peace, and happiness. May this festival bring hope and prosperity to all who celebrate.
