Why I Switched from Painting to Digital Designs

Updated: Nov 18, 2024

Art has been close to my heart since I was young. I loved drawing all through high school. Unfortunately, art is often not given much emphasis in schools, and while I understand that there’s a need to focus on more "practical" skills, art’s value is sometimes overlooked. Art can be subjective, which makes it harder to quantify or predict success in a traditional sense, and it may not always be seen as a stable path for making a living.

Why I Started with Paintings

Over the years, I tried my hand at various crafts and art forms. I’ve painted, made soap and candles, and even created cement trays. I don’t feel tied to any one medium or type of art; instead, I enjoy exploring and experimenting with what’s popular or inspiring at the moment. Before long, though, I accumulated quite a collection! Living in an apartment with my husband and kids, I began to notice that my art was taking over our space...walls, shelves, and corners were filled.

The Transition: Why I Chose Digital Products

I was able to sell a lot of my paintings through Facebook, where I could connect with friends and others interested in my art. However, eventually, I realized that my projects were taking over our home, and as my kids grew, I knew they’d need more space. Moving wasn’t practical, so I began thinking about options that could fit my creative interests without taking up physical space.

But small space wasn’t the only reason. I’ve always loved trying out new art forms and experimenting with different media, so transitioning to digital products felt like a natural way to explore something fresh. Digital design offers the opportunity to try different styles and ideas without limitations on space or materials. This flexibility appealed to me, even though I haven’t stopped loving painting. I still plan to return to painting small pieces when time permits and may explore other crafts or art forms along the way.

That’s when digital products seemed perfect...no clutter, no mess, and flexible working hours. Tools like Canva made it easier than I expected; with ready-made templates and design elements, creating digital items became both accessible and enjoyable for me. While I may not be a trained graphic designer, I’ve found that Canva allows me to focus on the joy of designing, blending functionality with creativity in a way that fits my style and vision. I also know how to use Photoshop, but Canva’s resources simplify the process, letting me experiment with designs without needing advanced tools for every project. For me, it’s about the love of creating something beautiful and useful.

In 2023, I reopened my Etsy shop and began selling digital items. Starting with planners for my kids, I thought I’d give it a shot. At first, it seemed simple...there are so many videos online making digital sales look effortless, but I quickly learned it’s far from easy.

What I’ve Learned Along the Way

I genuinely enjoy creating digital products, but it’s been a journey of learning and adapting. Designing isn’t the hard part; it’s the selling that requires real patience and strategy. I had to learn how to use Canva, which was new to me, and how to make planners and templates that people might want. And then there’s the competitive side: so many sellers offer similar products at incredibly low prices, making it challenging to stand out.

But going through this process has been necessary. While some people may find quicker success, I believe it’s important to experience those initial challenges, face obstacles, and learn to adapt. Each step has helped me grow, from understanding SEO and pricing to accepting that it’s okay to start small. I balance this work alongside my day job, which means progress may be slow, but it’s still progress. This past year, I’ve also learned about platforms like Notion, blogging, and KDP, each adding to my skills and helping me find my creative voice.

How Digital Products Reflect My Creative Growth

Exploring digital products has opened up new ways to share my creativity without being limited by physical space. With digital products, I’m able to reach people who appreciate my work from anywhere, regardless of location. It’s rewarding to know that something I designed can fit into someone else’s life in a helpful or inspiring way. Digital art allows me to experiment with new ideas and stay inspired, which helps me keep growing both as a creator and a small business owner.

For anyone considering a shift in their creative work or hobbies, remember that new directions can bring growth and fulfillment. Moving from painting to digital products has been a big learning experience for me, helping me grow and adapt in ways I didn’t expect. Embracing something new even with its challenges, has shown me there’s always more to explore. I still plan to go back to painting smaller pieces when I have time, but working with digital creations has opened up fresh possibilities.

It’s also important to know that digital design isn’t for everyone, and it’s not always a quick way to earn. Some may find it fulfilling, while others might not. What works for me might not work for someone else, and that’s okay. If you’re on the edge of change, take a small step in the direction that feels right for you...you never know where it might lead.
